Atmoscape is a real-time dynamic environment rendering system. The basic environment involves a modern implementation of Nishita's atmospheric scattering model for sky rendering and aerial perspective for determining ground scattering. The sky model is then extended to include a global cloud solution. The view frustum is clipped to a lower and upper plane for cloud rendering, and a procedural volume is generated and computed in perspective-space for that part of the view frustum. Rather than handle individual clouds, this global solution handles the entire visible volume at once, making it much easier to handle overcast and dense clouds than it would be with other solutions. Atmospheric effects and inscattered lighting are used to dynamically light the clouds. The system also renders light shafts based on atmospheric conditions and how much sunlight is absorbed when light passes through the clouds.
